Reproductive Rights: The Year in Review

Reproductive Rights: The Year in Review

Reproductive rights remained one of the most contested areas of women's policy across multiple countries in 2025. From access restrictions in some US states to expanded provision in others, and ongoing debates in European and Asian jurisdictions, the picture is genuinely complex — and uneven.

United States: continued state-by-state divergence

Following the 2022 Dobbs decision, US abortion access varies dramatically by state. 14 states have near-total bans; 23 states have protective measures; the rest sit in a middle ground with various restrictions. 2025 saw increasing use of telemedicine for medication abortion across state lines, with ongoing legal challenges.

Maternal mortality continues to rise in states with restrictions, particularly affecting Black women. The data showing this connection has hardened over 2024-2025.

United Kingdom: incremental expansion

Abortion remains legal up to 24 weeks under the 1967 Abortion Act. 2024 saw Westminster decriminalise abortion outside the time limit for the pregnant person specifically (medical practitioners still face restrictions). Northern Ireland's 2019 decriminalisation continues to be implemented with ongoing access challenges.

Europe: mixed direction

France enshrined abortion rights in its constitution (2024). Poland's new government partially rolled back restrictive abortion law. Italy and Hungary continue restrictive trajectories with provider availability decreasing.

Where the broader healthcare conversation has shifted

Contraception access. Several US states have expanded over-the-counter access to hormonal contraception. UK Pharmacy First scheme expanded contraception consultations through community pharmacies.

Menopause healthcare. UK saw significant policy expansion in 2024 — HRT prescription prepayment cap, mandatory menopause policies for large employers. Awareness has shifted from niche concern to mainstream policy issue.

Fertility treatment. NHS access remains uneven; private sector expanded significantly. Increased visibility of IVF access for single women and same-sex couples.

Reproductive rights have moved in different directions in different jurisdictions throughout 2025. Stay informed about your local situation and the policies of where you might travel or move.
